The new hydros®STEEL technology has been developed based on the well-established and successful hydros®PLUS technology and is used in restoration of steel, ductile iron, and plastic pipe, preferably with polyethylene pipe. In this installation process, the old pipe is split and expanded by the cutter head, and the new pipe run, with protection against external corrosion, is pulled back in one simple operation. The split pipe remains in the ground as a protective cover for the new pipe. Operational integrity is ensured because closed cavities cannot develop between old and new pipe. Since the new pipe is not being deformed when pulling through, standardized fittings may be used. In order to connect services and other connecting lines, using a special technique the protective cover can be removed quickly and safely.
The new hydros®STEEL technology is vibration-free and extremely quiet at <= 55 dB (A) (24-hour permit for 7-day operation); its current design allows installation lengths of up to 650 ft (200 m) and pipe sizes from 3" through 12" (DN75-DN300). The original pipe size can be kept or expanded by one size, or in special cases, even by two sizes in a special procedure.
